Is the Scene Safe?

Katja Hurt
Safety is at the heart of what we do every time we don a patrol cross or respond to an incident. Yet most of us stop our scene-size-up at environmental and human hazards. How often do we consider the cultural, professional, and psychological safety in our ongoing assessments? It turns out that the scene is not always as safe as we think it is. This session is for you if you are ready to share your knowledge, challenge your thinking, and join other first responders in increasing safety from this moment forward.
Session 1

Lastly, we will spend our second hour supporting attendees to develop their home patrol's PFA implementation program. Come prepared to put pen to paper!

Women's Program

Sally Seelye
We are excited to present a very special session at this year's Convention! Veteran patroller and licensed fitness instructor Kim Dorman is going to talk with us about how we can best set ourselves up to ski and patrol well into our more "experienced" years.

Kim, the owner of Fitness in the Pink, is well-known for designing programs around long term strength, balance and nutrition - and is a firm believer in creating a plan you'll actually stick to. (It's like she knows my struggle!) There will also be Q & A, and time permitting we may be able to talk her into running us through an exercise demo. Don't miss out, this is going to be fantastic!

Troopiter

Dave Miller
Scheduling patrol shifts and training while tracking who did what is essential for the smooth operation of your patrol. Yet it takes time and is administrative work that not many patrollers love to do. For many patrols, this data resides in spreadsheets and emails sent around to different people as your volunteer staff changes over the years.

The Mt. Hood Ski Patrol has had an online scheduling system to help with this for more than 20 years. In 2019 the custom system owned by the patrol was upgraded to Troopiter.com, a system built by Mt. Hood patroller Dave Miller. Troopiter was built from the ground up to handle scheduling, tracking, and communications for multiple patrols. Last season it was also used by the Hurricane Ridge Ski Patrol, Bogus Basin Ski Patrol, and 49° North Ski Patrol.

Attend this talk to learn about the system, communicate to Dave your administrative chief complaint and distracting injuries, and determine if transport to a higher level of care with Troopiter is the radio call you want to make after the conference. If another talk conflicts with this one, see Dave at the Troopiter vendor’s table for an assessment.

Cascade B

Avalanche

Brad Acker
The first part of this session will cover new processes in tracking patrollers working toward becoming an avalanche instructor, ideas for continuing education, and field questions pertaining to NSP paperwork. You'll get an update on the new NSP learning management system along with ideas on how it can be used while still putting on a "customized" avalanche class. With the remaining time we will cover two topics / concepts which have gained popularity in avalanche education in the last few year. The Park Canada, Avalanche Terrain Classification Scale (ATES) and a 2018 paper by Grant Statham, A conceptual model of avalanche hazard (CMAH). At first blush the CMAH paper reads as a forecasting tool, however many key concepts can be pulled out for use in an avalanche level 1 course.
